Internship / Volunteer Opportunities

The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) offers a limited number of internships to individuals each year in the following areas:

        • Community Health
        • Communicable Disease Control/Epidemiology
        • Public Health Emergency Management
        • Environmental Health
        • Homeless Services

An internship with the Health Department is a great way to gain knowledge about public health while acquiring valuable workplace experience.  Internship opportunities are dependent on need and area of specialization.  On your application, please indicate your specific areas of interest for us to best determine possible placement.  Once your application is complete, please submit the packet via email to David.Thompson@longbeach.gov.

Once your application has been submitted, it will be distributed to Health Department program leads with whom your interests align.  They will then contact you directly if there is an internship opportunity available.  At that point, potential interns will be interviewed and will be required to complete Live Scan fingerprinting.

PLEASE NOTE:  The Department requires all interns and volunteers to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the City's Occupational Health Clinic.  Internship start dates are unable to be solidified until submission is made.  If selected for an internship, you will receive additional submission instructions.
