Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Week 2025

A young girl eating an appleChildhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Week will be observed statewide October 19-25, 2025. Protecting children from lead exposure is critical to lifelong health. Even small amounts of lead in the body can adversely impact intelligence quotient (IQ), ability to pay attention and academic achievement. Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Week is the week of October 19-25, 2025. Our campaign message this year is Nutrition as Prevention.

Community Workshops

Every Lead Week the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) hosts of themed webinars. This year we have presentations from Women, Infants and Children (WIC), Veggielution and Second Harvest of Silicon Valley and Los Angeles CLPPP. Each webinar provides an opportunity for community members to learn about the foods we eat and how something as simple as our diet can help prevent lead poisoning. We encourage all of Long Beach families to register for a presentation. A description of each presentation and a link to register is provided below.

Assistance For Testing

Most children with lead poisoning do not look or act sick. Children at risk of lead exposure should be tested at both one and two years of age. Additionally, at-risk children three to six years old, who were not tested at ages one and two years old, should have a blood lead test. Parents can talk to their child’s doctor about getting tested for lead.

Children who receive services from Medi-Cal or Women, Infants and Children (WIC) are eligible for free testing. Private health insurance plans will also pay for the test. To find out about eligibility for Medi-Cal, call: 562-570-7979.

If you need further assistance, contact Long Beach CLPPP at 562-570-4564.
