CHILDHOOD LEAD POISONING PREVENTION PROGRAM

CLPPP Services

The Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP) offers an array of services to families living in the Long Beach area. All children under the age of six years old should have received at least one (1) lead screening. Ideally children should have had a lead screening at one years of age and again at two. If their lead screening yielded an abnormally high result, your child may be eligible for direct services from CLPPP.

Children who meet state guidelines for lead poisoning are eligible for case management services from a Public Health Nurse (PHN). PHN offers in-home health assessments of the child including  developmental assessments and nutritional assessments. PHN will complete a care plan for the lead burden child and work with their medical provider to provide recommendations and ensure routine re-testing as appropriate. PHN will also refer client to appropriate resources. Lead burdened children are case managed by CLPPP until the child has met satisficatory lead levels for closure. Case management is optional but highly recommended.

Families that qualify for nursing case management from CLPPP are also eligible for an in-home environmental assessment by a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS). The REHS will conduct an inspection of your home to find potential sources of lead exposure that may be in paint in older homes or in the soil on your property. The REHS may take samples from the home including dust and food for further laboratory testing.

Families are asked to not use water at least twelve (12) hours before assessment as water in the home will be tested as well. Pending results, REHS will give recommendations to tenants / homeowners on how to reduce lead exposure in their home. REHS will also work with landlords and homeowners to assist them in completing lead abatement as necessary.

CLPPP not only provides case management to families with lead burdened children. CLPPP actively seeks to prevent lead poisoning in the community through education and community outreach. CLPPP works with our community partners to provide workshops to parent groups. The Health Educator attends Health Fairs and other community events to give Long Beach families one-on-one education regarding the dangers of lead and to encourage testing.

Our Health Educator is available to give presentations in English and Spanish for community groups, parent groups and other non-medical groups by request. CLPPP is also always looking for opportunities to provide outreach at events. If you are interested in a presentation or to have our Health Educator table one of your events, please contact us at HE-CLPPP@longbeach.gov or by phone 562-570-4564.

In addition to case management, CLPPP's Public Health Nurse provides the medical community with current information regarding lead sources, screening and legislative information. They also verify that childhood lead testing and screening policies are followed and implemented. If requested, the PHN can provide trainings to medical staff regarding clinical lead management and best practices.
