Long Beach, CA – The City of Long Beach celebrated the grand reopening of the renovated Kids' Corner at the Multi-Service Center (MSC), a vital space designed to support families experiencing homelessness. Mayor Rex Richardson and other City leaders joined members of Leadership Long Beach and Gensler to showcase the improved space, which offers children a welcoming environment for reading, play and learning.
“The MSC is a vital resource for people experiencing homelessness, and we're proud to offer a safe, welcoming space for children while their parents receive services,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “Thanks to Leadership Long Beach, Gensler and dedicated volunteers, this thoughtfully designed area gives kids a chance to read, play and unwind during what can be a stressful time.”
The area now features updated reading areas, interactive learning stations and a welcoming space for children of all ages. The renovation supports the City's commitment to providing accessible, engaging resources for families, with a focus on fostering early childhood development, encouraging parent-child interaction and creating a positive sensory experience. Additionally, Gensler donated 75 backpacks filled with crayons, coloring sheets and small toys, giving children a comforting gift to take home following their visit to the MSC.
"The Kids' Corner is more than just a play area; it's a valuable resource that encourages learning, creativity and connection," said Vice Mayor and Seventh District Councilmember Roberto Uranga. "By investing in our children’s development, we’re investing in the future of Long Beach, and we’re proud to provide this improved space for families receiving services at the MSC."
The transformation of the Kids’ Corner was made possible through the generous support of Leadership Long Beach Class of 2024 and Gensler. In collaboration with a dedicated group of partners — including Hero Flooring, MATT Construction, JBI Interiors, Renegade, Turf Design, Epic Trends, Loll Design, iSiMAR, Metropolitan West, and Kirei — Gensler reimagined an underutilized corner of the MSC into a nature-inspired escape designed specifically for children. Every detail of the remodel was carefully curated to create a peaceful retreat, offering young visitors a calming alternative to the main waiting area.
“In alignment with our mission to foster a more just and inclusive future, Gensler was honored to partner on this impactful project,” said Brianna Seabron, Senior Associate, Project Manager at Gensler Los Angeles. “We believe design has the power to create meaningful change, and revitalizing this small space provides a moment of comfort and support for children and their families during a critical time.”
The impact of this renovation extends beyond the Kids’ Corner, enhancing the entire MSC experience for families. By creating a space tailored to young visitors, Gensler and its partners have made a meaningful difference for those who walk through the MSC doors.
“The MSC remains a vital hub for individuals and families experiencing homelessness, offering essential services and resources,” said Alison King, Director of Health and Human Services. “The renovated Kids’ Corner further strengthens its mission by providing a dedicated space for children whose families are receiving services.”
