It is OUR MISSION to improve the quality of life by promoting a safe and healthy community in which to LIVE, WORK, LEARN and PLAY.

Welcome to the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services

The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) has been improving the health of the Long Beach community for more than a century. We strive to create a safe and healthy community for all to live, work, and play.  Long Beach is one of only three city-run health departments in California, allowing for better engagement with its people, neighborhoods, businesses and community partners, and a greater understanding of the city's strengths and needs.  With over 500 employees located in nine sites throughout the city, the Health Department operates with a $117 million annual budget, 99% of which comes from Federal, State, County and private funds.  This local focus allows the Health Department to coordinate resources from all sources to best meet the needs of our city.  We look forward to working with you on our journey towards a healthier Long Beach.

Long Beach, CA – The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) is urging residents not to forage for or consume wild mushrooms due to the risk of amatoxin poisoning. Long Beach, CA - Long Beach Acting City Health Officer Dr. Cliff Okada has ordered the temporary closure of coastal swimming areas west of the Pier in Long Beach due to sewage spills. State law requires temporary closure and posting at beaches in these situations, out of an abundance of caution, until the water quality meets State requirements.
Long Beach, CA — The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) reaffirms its support for the childhood immunization schedule recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and continues to follow California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidance, which aligns with AAP.
