Long Beach Lifeguards want to remind visitors to exercise caution when visiting the beach this summer. Tragedy in the ocean can happen quickly, therefore having basic knowledge of the marine environment is critical when visiting. coming to the beach. Use the following safety tips:

1. When swimming in the ocean, always swim near an open Lifeguard Station
2. Never swim alone
3. Supervise children closely, even when lifeguards are present
4. Don’t rely on floatation devices, such as rafts or inner-tubes. Even US Coast Guard approved life jackets are not a substitute for swimming ability
5. Do not dive into unfamiliar waters. Enter feet first to protect your head, neck, and spine
6. Follow regulations and the direction of lifeguards
7. Never turn your back to waves in the ocean
8. Never throw sand and always fill holes before you leave the beach
9. Do not litter
10. Use sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun
11. Use caution when crossing bike paths
12. Dogs are prohibited on school grounds, bike paths, or on beaches, except for designated “Dog Beaches”
