Release Date: 2015-09-16
The community is invited to attend the second annual “READY Long Beach” Community Preparedness Expo on Saturday, September 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Heartwell Park, near the corner of Clark Avenue and Carson Street, to learn how to prepare for emergencies such as earthquakes, fires, floods, and terrorist events.
The free event is sponsored by Long Beach CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), in partnership with the Long Beach Fire Department, various City departments, Southern California Edison, and other disaster response agencies.
The expo will feature information booths, emergency preparedness demonstrations, emergency supplies for purchase, and will also include a kid’s fun zone, food for purchase, and emergency response vehicles. After a dinner break from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., READY Long Beach will conclude with a free showing of the Disney movie “Planes: Fire & Rescue” starting at 6:00 p.m.
The event will include information regarding:
• How to build minimum supplies of food, water and other basic survival tools recommended by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA);
• How and when to safely shut off gas and water lines;
• How to build a family evacuation and response plan; and
• How to engage your neighbors in disaster planning.
The CERT program trains residents in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. For more information, visit www.longbeach.gov/fire and click on “Community Outreach” or call 562-570-2525.
