Sustainability

Since the 1970s, the City of Long Beach has worked to reduce emissions and use more renewable energy. We continuously work to ensure each vehicle at Fleet reduces its environmental impact.
In 2022, the City launched the Long Beach Climate Action Plan (LB CAP). This plan outlines how the city’s residents and businesses can reduce greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions and how we can protect the community from climate change. A part of this plan includes replacing gas vehicles with electric vehicles when possible.
“Our consistent approach in managing the City’s fleet of 2,000-plus vehicles is to push the technology envelope and utilize the greenest options available for the City to serve its residents."

Fleet Composition

Sustainability information and initiatives
- Currently, 59% of the City’s fleet uses alternative fuel which is above the 2025 goal of 57%. For vehicles that are not used for public safety, the fuel is made of 75% alternative fuel.
- More than 50% of vehicle purchases use alternative fuels
- Continued strong progress in fleet sustainability and one of the few fleets with a team dedicated to green fleet initiatives that help the transition to a zero-emissions fleet.
- Planning for new California Air Resource Board (CARB) Regulation: Advanced Clean Fleet (ACF) mandate. Starting in 2024, 50% of eligible vehicle purchases were required to be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). In 2027, it’s 100%.
The City’s ZEV Fleet transition project will provide numerous benefits, including:
- Increase business opportunities for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) manufacturers, ZEV infrastructure site hots, electricians, and general contractors.
- Create new jobs in ZEV infrastructure engineering and installation, procurement, program management, and maintenance
- Keep natural resources by greatly lowering the environmental impacts caused by vehicle emissions.
- Reduce and eliminate climate pollutants, including GHG emissions
- Each medium and heavy-duty ZEV added to the fleet lowers the City's dependence on petroleum.
