Safety and Environment
The Wilmington Oil Field operates in one of the most densely populated urban environments of any major oilfield in the world. That context makes safety and environmental responsibility not just regulatory requirements, but the foundation of every operational decision.

Safety Program
The field’s safety program follows OSHA guidelines, industry best practices, and a permit-to-work system that ensures every task is reviewed and authorized before it begins. The four guiding principles of the safety culture are:
- Safe production is the standard
- The goal is zero injuries
- Everyone is a safety leader
- No job is worth an injury
THUMS has been recognized by the National Safety Council for workplace safety leadership. The program’s success relies on commitment, responsibility, and cooperation from every person working in the field, from operators and engineers to contractors and inspectors.
Environmental Stewardship
The THUMS Islands host California native plant gardens that have been certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) since 2005. The WHC is a national non-profit organization that works with companies to advance biodiversity and sustainability in their operations. In 2016, the island habitat projects earned the WHC Landscaping Project Award.
The field’s environmental and health and safety team monitors and maintains these conservation areas year-round, conducting planting and weed removal events, collecting biodiversity data, and recertifying the program on a regular cycle.
Regulatory Compliance
Field contractor California Resources Corporation (CRC) has consistently earned strong ratings from Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for its climate disclosure, a recognition it has maintained for multiple consecutive years. CRC’s stated values of character, responsibility, and commitment guide their environmental performance and community engagement.
Long Beach oil operations are conducted under some of the strictest environmental, safety, and operational regulations in the world. Producing oil locally under California regulations may reduce reliance on imported oil from regions with less rigorous environmental and safety standards.
