Automated Speed Enforcement Pilot Program

Release Date: 2025-12-16

Item 17: Automated Speed Enforcement Pilot Program

On December 16 Councilmember Zendejas voted to approve Item 17 to launch the implementation of a pilot program that addresses one of the major issues resulting in fatalities and serious injuries citywide: speeding.

The City of Long Beach was one of six cities across the state authorized to implement such a program per Assembly Bill 645. City Council voted to move forward with this program. Public Works Director, Joshua Hickman, shares the program is meant to promote transparency and impartial speed enforcement that complements traditional safety strategies. The system is limited to capturing only the rear license plate of a vehicle being driven 11 miles per hour over the speed limit, at which point a civil citation will be processed and issued.

Councilwoman Zendejas has been a lead advocate calling for alternative forms of enforcement to address this traffic safety issue. Eighteen locations were identified as high-need citywide. The following two corridors in district one have been selected:
  • Ocean Boulevard
  • Shoreline Drive

“I know that I personally have been involved due to my residents really wanting safe streets. I think this is a great option to bring something forward to address what we know is a big problem in the City of Long Beach.” - Councilmember Zendejas
