Project Timeline
August 6, 2024 - The City Council requested the City Manager to work with the Office of Cannabis Oversight and all relevant departments to conduct a feasibility study on hosting temporary cannabis special events within City limits, including types of appropriate venues, and report back with a City Council presentation in 60 days.
September 6, 2024 - The City issued a press release to seek community input on the feasibility of permitting cannabis special events. Community members are invited to complete an online survey, available now through Wednesday, Sept. 25, to share their input on the potential types of cannabis special events and potential policy considerations, as well as any concerns.
September 25, 2024 - The online survey in English closed as of 5:30 p.m. The online survey is now available in Spanish, Tagalog, and Khmer until October 16, 2024.
October 16, 2024 - The online survey in Spanish, Tagalog, and Khmer closed as of 5:30 p.m.
October 22, 2024 - Cannabis special events feasibility study update and presentation.
January 23, 2025 - Cannabis Special Events Feasibility Study.
April 15, 2025 - A request from the City Council directing staff to draft an ordinance to allow cannabis special events.
March 24, 2026 - First reading to declare an ordinance amending Long Beach Municipal Code (LBMC) Section 5.92.030, Section 8.68.160, Section 8.68.170 and adding Division XIII to Chapter 5.92 (Adult Use Cannabis Business and Activities). Adopt a resolution setting twelve (12) as the maximum number of cannabis special event permits that may be issued to each cannabis event organizer per year.
