Pursuant to California Elections Code Section 9208, proponents of initiative petitions who have met the California State Election Code requirements to circulate an initiative petition have 180 days to file a petition with the City Clerk from the date upon which they receive the official Ballot, Title and Summary from the City of Long Beach, Office of the City Clerk. The petition must be filed during normal business hours; and if the petition is not filed within the time period permitted, the petition shall be deemed void for all purposes.

Petition proponents are fully within their right to circulate a valid petition until the 180 circulation period is exhausted. However, petition proponents are strongly encouraged to submit petition(s) to the Office of the City Clerk no later than May 16, 2016. Doing so, will allow sufficient time to:

1. Review the petition for sufficiency;

2. If found sufficient, submit the results to City Council for Council action pursuant to the Elections Code; and

3. Meet the deadline established by the County of Los Angeles for submitting election consolidation requests to the County pursuant to California Elections Code 10403. (i.e., In the event the City Council opts to submit the initiative ordinance, without alteration, to the voters at the next regularly scheduled election, pursuant to Elections Code 9215 (b)(c)).
