Long Beach, CA (October 13, 2016) – Long Beach City Clerk Maria de la Luz Garcia announced today that she will be holding a school-wide student mock election at Cabrillo High School for the second year in a row in an effort to promote youth civic engagement. The mock student election is scheduled to take place Tuesday, October 18, 2016 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The aim of the mock student election is to create a voting experience that resembles an actual election day. Students will have an opportunity to participate in all aspects of elections including staffing the polls, casting their ballot, and observing the canvass of votes cast after the polls close.

In 2015, approximately 51 percent of the student population cast a ballot. “Engaging young people in our democracy has to start early in a setting that is conducive to learning and that begins in our schools. My hope is that these students carry this experience with them into adulthood and in doing so become active and engaged citizens,” said City Clerk Garcia.

“We are thrilled to be collaborating once again with the City Clerk on this project. For our students, it brings to life what they’ve been learning in the classroom and puts it in a context in which they can readily understand,” said Joey Montalvo, Cabrillo Academy of Law and Justice (CAL-J) teacher.

Students will be casting their ballots during three periods including before the start of school, nutrition, and lunch. The bell schedule is as follows:
• Before school, 7:00 a.m. to 7:50 a.m.
• Nutrition, 9:48 a.m. to 10:06 a.m.
• Lunch, 12:06 p.m. to 12:44 p.m.
All members of the media are encouraged to attend this dynamic event. Cabrillo High administration will be available for press inquiries during the lunch period, 12:06 p.m. to 12:44 p.m. Members of the media are to check-in at the Administration Office where they will obtain a visitor’s badge and be directed to the event location. Cabrillo High is located at: 2001 Santa Fe Ave, Long Beach, CA 90810.
