Due to a sudden increase in dogs, the Long Beach Animal Shelter has resorted to possible euthanasia in order to lessen the strain on their overrun kennels.

After four years of striving toward a goal of saving every treatable animal, Long Beach’s animal shelter is faced with a difficult choice: Starting Tuesday, March 14, shelter officials may have to begin euthanizing dogs that likely are adoptable, though they might need a little extra care or training.

Tabare Depaep, the foster program coordinator, is also looking for more Long Beach residents interested in becoming foster parents to help with the responsibilities that come with the upcoming kitten season.

Animal Care Services works under a Compassion Saves model that emphasizes community outreach, education, guidance, and support services rather than euthanization. The facility also hired a Foster Coordinator, Behavior and Enrichment Coordinator, and two Volunteer Adoption Coordinators.

Long Beach Animal Care Services Pet Literacy Program promotes humane treatment and the socialization of animals through reading out loud. This program improves the shelter environment for our guests, creates a connection between people and animals, promotes socialization, and prepares the animals in our care for adoption.
