The Registered or Legal Owner of an impounded vehicle may authorize the release of an impounded vehicle to another party by signing a letter of authorization. All persons authorized to obtain the release of an impounded vehicle must possess a valid driver's license. The letter must include: The name of the Registered or Legal Owner The license plate number or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the impounded vehicle The name of the person authorized to receive the vehicle The signature of the Registered or Legal Owner A copy of the Registered or Legal Owner's identification needs to accompany the letter to verify the Registered or Legal Owner's signature. The Registered or Legal Owner may fax the letter and a copy of the identification to the Police Impound Yard at (562) 570-2840
