The City of Long Beach today activated a new traffic signal, as well as LED street lights, at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and 14th Street. New pedestrian sidewalks, way-finding signage and sharrows are also being added in the area.

“The community had requested this traffic signal to improve the pedestrian safety in the neighborhood,” said Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez. “This intersection is busy with residents of all ages accessing Washington Middle School, 14th Street Park, the Michael K. Green Skate Park and the Long Beach Rescue Mission; I am excited that we are promoting walkability and connectivity in the Washington Neighborhood.”

The improvements are also part of the City’s Bicycle System Gap Closure, which links together existing bicycle infrastructure in the area, as well as in sections of Harding Street, Del Amo Boulevard, San Antonio Drive, and Del Mar Avenue.

The LED (light-emitting diode) street lights were installed as part of a citywide retrofit program expected to annually reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 7,297 tons and save $1 million in energy and maintenance costs, by replacing high-pressure sodium lights.
