On Monday, July 18, a sewage spill from a broken sewage pipe in downtown Los Angeles entered the Los Angeles River, prompting the closure of all coastal beaches in Long Beach.

The spill is ongoing, and was initially estimated at approximately 108,000 gallons.

The Los Angeles River terminates in Long Beach. City of Long Beach Acting Health Officer, Dr. Mauro Torno, has issued the order to close all coastal beaches until Health Department lab tests indicate the water is safe for swimming.
