Long Beach Airport (LGB) is the most affordable airport in the United States this year, according to the seventh annual Airport Affordability Index published by Cheapflights.com. The yearly survey is compiled each summer from search data that helps travelers compare airfare pricing across the country, and sheds light on air travel trends.

“It’s great to hear that Long Beach Airport has regained the No. 1 spot for affordability,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “Long Beach is the gateway to Southern California, and having the most affordable airport in the country is an incredible economic asset for our city.”

The average airfare at LGB was only $202. LGB was the most affordable airport in two previous surveys, and last year was the seventh-most affordable airport.

“The Cheapflights.com survey shows why it is so important to comparison shop when searching for airfare,” said Juan López-Rios, Interim Airport Director. “Travelers are currently enjoying some of the best prices in recent history for airfare, which is why it is such a bonus for Long Beach Airport to be at the top of the list for affordability.”

The study of 101 of the most searched airports on Cheapflights.com ranks the average airfare that users find to the most popular destinations during June, while also comparing fares to the previous year.

The study found that there is an overall decrease in the average airfare, with the highest airfare being $150 lower on average than in 2015. Following LGB in the rankings were Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in the number two spot with an average cost of $203, and LaGuardia Airport at number three with an average cost of $215.

About Long Beach Airport
Founded in 1923 as the first municipally-owned airport in California, Long Beach Airport (LGB) recently completed a revitalization to update its facilities. In 2012, a new passenger concourse opened to the public and has since garnered extensive praise for its modern design and architecture, local eateries and easygoing travel experience. Recently, both Fodor’s Travel Guide and the BBC named LGB one of the top 10 terminals in the world, and USA Today and 10Best.com recognized LGB for Best Airport Dining in their Readers Choice poll. LGB offers non-stop service to 14 U.S. destinations, with the most recent additions being the cities of Reno and San Jose, while supporting a healthy general aviation community serving 2.6 million passengers a year with nearly 300,000 annual operations. The airport is also a source of substantial economic activity and employment, as well as a leader in maintaining a sustainable, environmentally responsible operation.
