For the sixth consecutive year, the City of Long Beach has been named a Top 10 Digital City, surpassing numerous other cities in a national survey that spotlights municipalities best demonstrating how information and communication technologies are used to enhance public-sector service.

"Being a Top-10 Digital City for six consecutive years demonstrates that we are continuing to use technology to make it easier for our residents and businesses to access City services and to do business within the City," said Mayor Robert Garcia.

The designation was based on the City’s progress in implementing a robust and fully integrated smart digital city, including:

  •  Using technology to provide 24/7 mobile access to government services and data and to serve as a catalyst for collaboration, engagement and connection for the entire community.
  • Creating Bizport, the Long Beach Business Portal website, to make it easier for businesses and investors to find the information they need to quickly start and grow a business.
  • Changing procurement methods by working with CityMart to launch invitations for ideas and solutions, instead of simply asking for the cost of services and resources already predetermined by the City. By including the entire community in problem-solving, the City of Long Beach is constantly exploring new and innovative solutions that are the result of constant crowd-sourcing.

“Collaboration within our public and private partnerships have enabled Long Beach to utilize technology to support smarter, faster and leaner government processes,” said Bryan M. Sastokas, Chief Information Officer for the City of Long Beach. “It is exciting for the City to be recognized for our use of technology to promote new platforms of innovation in government operations and public service delivery.”

The Digital Cities Survey is part of the Center for Digital Government’s Digital Communities program. Open to all U.S. cities, the Digital Cities survey examines each city’s/county’s overall technology plans, as well as their programs, and recognizes leading cities using technology to enhance government transparency and security, foster citizen engagement, and improve services for citizens. Responses are reviewed and selected by a panel of judges based on a set of criteria and how well the cities implemented these services across the entire city.

“This year’s top digital cities are using technology to ensure citizens can meaningfully interact with city government more easily than any other time in history,” said Todd Sander, executive director of the Center for Digital Government. “From open data portals to enhanced connectivity and mobile platforms, this year’s top-ranked cities are actively promoting transparency, encouraging citizen participation and making it easier for people to do business with government. Congratulations to the winners!"

Now in its 15th anniversary year, this annual survey was conducted by the Center for Digital Government, a national research and advisory institute focused on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government. The center is a division of e.Republic, a national publishing, event, and research company focused on smart media for public sector innovation. The 2016 Digital Cities Survey Winners have all employed technology to encourage engagement, improve citizen services, and enhance transparency.
