Long Beach Mounted Police
HISTORY
The Long Beach Mounted Police is an organization that was founded in 1935 by 16 men who wished to combine their affection for riding with their pride in the City of Long Beach. Over the years, the Long Beach Mounted Police has exemplified one of California's last links to the rich traditions of the state's pioneering days.
Millions have been thrilled by the colorful pageantry of the annual Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. For many, the most vivid memory is of this spectacular equestrian unit. Since 1947, the unit has been honored to lead parade on numerous occasions.
Today, this renowned group is comprised of men and women who have qualified as Reserve Specialist Officers in the Long Beach Police Department. Its members continue to share the organization's founding ideals. When they are not engaged in public appearances, they often enjoy informal trail rides and group outings involving their family members.
PARADES
The Long Beach Mounted Police are always in great demand across this nation. They have appeared in hundreds of cities throughout the United States, including the states of Hawaii, New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, Oregon and two presidential inaugurations in Washington D.C. Locally, the group can be seen in city celebrations and parades in Indio, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Portuguese Bend, Long Beach, Hollywood and, of course, New Year's Day in Pasadena. In addition, they have traveled to such far away places as Canada, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro.
Over 100 members strong, the Long Beach Mounted Police take part in more than two dozen major events each year. Spectators are thrilled by the beauty of the white-manned golden Palomino horses and the gleam of their finely detailed, hand-crafted sterling silver and black leather saddles and accessories. Each saddle is a high quality work of art. Each rider is colorfully dressed in a western-style outfit complete with a ten-gallon hat and an old fashioned six shooter. Each rider guides his/her horse with skill developed through years of riding.
Each horse is individually owned. They are accepted based on color and height standards. Members are responsible for transporting their horses to local events. However, in the past, the horses have been transported by large vans, trains or by air for long distance events.
