Business License Team Inspection - Last updated 03/05/07 » Road Map to Establishing a Small Business » Building Permits for Commercial/Industrial Properties » Business License What is a Team Inspection?
The City of Long Beach listened to the concerns and issues raised by the business community relative to the complexity and various obstacles that must be overcome by business owners in trying to establish and open a business. As a result, the City initiated a study on how to simplify and streamline the business licensing/permitting process. That exercise resulted in the creation of the Team Inspection. A Team Inspection is required for specific businesses that have been determined to have a potential impact on public safety or community welfare. A Business Owner schedules a Team Inspection at the time they file for a business license and are fully stocked and ready to open for business. This is done at the Business License Counter in the Development Services Center on the 4th floor of City Hall. Once scheduled, a group of City inspectors visit the business establishment, meet the business owner and conduct and explain the results of their inspection. Our Goal
The main goal of this service is to help you establish your business in a timely manner with minimal problems and misunderstandings. Instead of scheduling several inspections with the individual reviewing departments over the course of potentially several weeks, you get all of the departments to conduct the required inspections at one time. This is a valuable service since, it minimizes your down time and eliminates the amount of confusion and repetitive requirements by the various departments involved. Who is on the Team?
Depending on the type of business you are trying to establish, the Team Inspection will usually consist of the following members: - Planning and Building – will send a building inspector who will be checking for life safety issues, code compliance, building permits and zoning issues.
- Fire – will be represented by a fire inspector who will be checking for life safety items, emergency exiting and lighting, fire suppression systems, and appropriate permits.
- Health – will provide one to two inspectors who will be checking for Health Code requirements, food handling and storage procedures, sanitary requirements, refrigeration and other approved and required equipment as well as the handling and containment of hazardous materials.
- Police – will send a special investigator who will be assuring compliance with all applicable local, state and federal laws relating to your business activities and checking for licenses and certificates.
Corrections
If at the conclusion of the Team Inspection you are handed a list of corrections from the team inspectors, it is your responsibility to correct any and all deficiencies listed. If you have any questions or concerns, please be sure to clarify the items with the appropriate inspector. Once you have complied with all of the corrections, call the appropriate department (Planning and Building, Fire, Health, Police) for final inspection. Further Assistance
