The Rancho Los Alamitos mesa has been occupied for more than 1,500 years and was home to Tongva people around 500 AD. The 7.5 acre site is a fragment of the once vast 300,000 acre rancho and contains the sprawling adobe house, 4 acres of historic gardens and an early 20th century barnyard with livestock. This is the only Long Beach site designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation Partner Program. Free & open Wednesday - Sunday, 1pm to 5pm.
Public Tours Open Wednesday-Sunday beginning at 1pm with the last tour starting at 4pm. School and special tours can be scheduled for free. All tours include a docent and are for children and adults. Groups of more than six should call two weeks in advance for a reservation.
Volunteer Program We offer opportunities for participation in the gardens, educational programs, hospitality, administration, & educational tour guides or docents. Flexible hours and a training schedule are included. Please call the Rancho for more information or sign up online. Education
Our primary mission is public education and meeting the needs of schools, teachers & students. Our general on-site school tour emphasizes issues of home and family, culture & environment. Special monthly programs like the Native American Program & the Explorers' Garden Map Program explore different topics in-depth and offer students an opportunity to work with authentic handcrafted materials & learn through creativity. Endorsed by the Smithsonian Institution, Footprints on the Land is a photo kit designed to explore the regional landscape, culture and geography through twenty of Rancho's historic photographic images. The kit will be available in every 3rd & 4th grade LBUSD classroom in for the current school year.
