2013: The Year in Review
City of Long Beach Accomplishments and Awards in 2013

Here’s a snapshot of some of the City’s accomplishments and awards in 2013:


  • Pension reform for all nine employee associations, saving $250 million over the next 10 years
  • 90% of the City’s beaches received “A” and “B” grades for water quality during the summer from Heal the Bay
  • Wireless Internet (WiFi) in all City libraries and in many parks
  • “Go LBPD” mobile app for residents to have a quicker and simpler way to keep in touch with the Police Department
  • Opened Fire Station 12 in North Long Beach
  • Completed the Promenade in Downtown Long Beach
  • Forty new Long Beach Police Officers from the 2013 Police Academy
  • Twenty-eight new Long Beach Firefighters from the 2013 Fire Academy
  • Completed 11 parks and open space projects, with 18 additional projects under construction or in development
  • Unveiled the nation’s first “Great Wall of Mulch,” an innovative 600-foot long-wall to control visual and noise pollution from the Terminal Island Freeway
  • Repaired 36 lane miles of major and secondary streets
  • Cleaned 68,740 graffiti sites
  • Filled 28,799 potholes
  • Assisted 1,675 persons with homeless prevention and 1,163 homeless persons with housing placement

Awards and Distinctions

  • Top 10 “Digital City” in America, for third consecutive year
  • Gold Medal (Best in the Nation) award for Excellence in Parks and Recreation Management from the National Parks and Recreation Association
  • Perfect score in the Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index (MEI) for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) inclusion in municipal law and policy
  • Eight programming awards for LBTV, the City’s cable channel
  • Aviation Project of the Year award for the new passenger concourse from the California Transportation Foundation
  • Excellence in Facility Design Award for the Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site Renovations from the California Parks and Recreation Society
