Schipske Honors Gold Star Mothers, Honor Our Fallen in Veterans Day Parade

Long Beach, CA  -- November 4, 2013 – Four mothers of soldiers who gave their lives, and the founder of Honoring Our Fallen, Laura Herzog, will accompany Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske in the 17th annual Veterans Day Parade on November 9th.

“I asked Honoring Our Fallen to invite Gold Star Mothers to ride in the Veterans Day Parade with me this year. We often forget about the sacrifice of the families whose loved ones gave their lives in service of our country. They are heroes too,” stated Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske, “I’m proud to be accompanied by these brave mothers who lost their sons in Iraq or Afghanistan.”

Schipske advocated for the City of Long Beach to Fly the Gold Star Mothers, Gold Star, and Blue Star Flags to Honor the families of armed Service members. On August 15, 2013, Long Beach became the first city in the nation to so honor the families and mothers of those who serve.

The Blue Star Flag is flown by parents of an armed service member or a community while there is an active conflict. The Gold Star is flown by mothers of service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Long Beach, the home of the Gold Star Manor, a retirement community for families of fallen service members and veterans worked with Schipske to find a permanent place of honor for the flags to be flown in the City.

About Honoring Our Fallen (HOF)

Founded by Laura Herzog in 2011, Honoring Our Fallen works daily along with like-minded nonprofit organizations, to serve families and children of our nation's fallen heroes. There is nothing we can do to bring back their loved ones, but HOF can do a lot to make the families here at home a little more comforted, knowing there is a community of support right on their doorstep.

HOF’s mission is unwavering: assist family members of fallen heroes during the initial shock of notification. HOF will work with appropriate government agencies and community members to provide comprehensive support for them. This assistance includes linking families with the resources they need to cope with life after loss.

HOF offers additional many ways to support our cause including:

  • Birthday Present Delivery for Children Of Our Fallen
  • Holiday Toy Drop for Children Of Our Fallen
