5th District Community Baby Shower

Councilwoman Schipske started the "Community Baby Shower" several years ago to provide a "basic going-home newborn kit" for low-income mothers to use after giving birth in local hospitals. This year, Councilwoman Schipske has again partnered with Long Beach Cares and the Long Beach Public Health Nurses to hold the Community Baby Shower.

You may help by donating new items for the newborn kits, including: diapers, diaper bags, baby wipes, bibs, onesies, socks, blankets, hats and mittens. Contributions of money (made out to Long Beach Cares) are also accepted. Donations can be dropped off on Mondays and Wednesdays during the month of May at 2760 N. Studebaker Road.

You are also invited to assist in assembling the kits at the Community Baby Shower:

2525 Grand Avenue, Long Beach 90815

Combat the Foreclosure Crisis

End the Foreclosure Crisis in Your Community

Five years after the housing market collapsed, America's economy is still weak. Unemployment and under-employment rates remain extremely high and middle and working-class families are struggling. The continued foreclosure crisis remains a major drag on our sputtering economy: homeowners are burdened by huge debts and record-high foreclosure rates continue to sap wealth and savings out of neighborhoods.

On May 17, 2013 at 1 p.m. EST, join policy experts and members of Local Progress for a national web briefing session to discuss how municipalities can help end the foreclosure crisis and generate economic growth by using eminent domain to reset mortgages to a fair market value. We'll talk about the innovative and powerful new proposal that cities around the country are considering in order to protect families and rejuvenate their local economies.

RSVP here for the call-in information and briefing packet.

Newcomb Academy Foundation "Golfing FORE Education"

For almost 10 years, the Newcomb Academy Foundation has been providing the children at Newcomb Academy, a K-8 school in the Long Beach Unified School District, with the staffing, programming and resources for curriculum no longer provided through the school district. This staffing and curriculum includes elementary and middle school computer lab, science lab, keyboarding, additional music instruction, middle school electives, sports and so much more! Our largest source of funding is from the proceeds of our annual Golf Classic, which will take place on June 3, 2013, at the Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, CA.

It is critical that we maintain funding for the staffing and expanded curriculum that have now become a staple for the children at Newcomb Academy and help our students achieve outstanding success, including the highest API score (917) for K-8 schools in the district. For this reason, we ask for your sponsorship of this important annual event.

Your support will help advance education in your local community and enable the Newcomb Academy Foundation to continue offering its existing programs, while continuing to expand curriculum for our students. The attached flyer outlines ways in which you can help students receive an excellent education.
