A Baby Shower for Long Beach
5th District Community Baby Shower

Councilwoman Schipske started the "Community Baby Shower" several years ago to provide a "basic going-home newborn kit" for low-income mothers to use after giving birth in local hospitals. This year, Councilwoman Schipske has again partnered with Long Beach Cares and the Long Beach Public Health Nurses to hold the Community Baby Shower. 

You may help by donating new items for the newborn kits, including: diapers, diaper bags, baby wipes, bibs, onesies, socks, blankets, hats and mittens. Contributions of money (made out to Long Beach Cares) are also accepted. Donations can be dropped off on Mondays and Wednesdays during the month of May at 2760 N. Studebaker Road.

Long Beach Police and Fire Memorial

On Tuesday, May 7th, the Long Beach Police and Fire Departments will host the annual Police & Fire Memorial Service to honor those individuals who died in the line of duty while serving the Long Beach community. 


Members of both departments, along with City dignitaries and staff, will pay tribute at the Police and Fire Memorial, located at the foot of Chestnut Avenue, south of Broadway in Long Beach, adjacent to City Hall.  The event will start promptly at 9:00am and should conclude by 9:45am.


The service will include a posting of the colors presentation by the Long Beach Police & Fire Honor Guard, the Pledge of Allegiance, an invocation, individual recognition of fallen officers and firefighters, a bagpiper performance, a 21-Gun Salute, a bugler playing Taps, as well as remarks by Mayor Bob Foster, Police Chief Jim McDonnell and Fire Chief Mike DuRee. Various Police & Fire vehicles will be on display.


The community is invited to attend and pay respects to these brave officers and firefighters who gave their lives while at the service of saving others.

The Asthma Resource Fair will provide numerous resources and educational materials for community members to learn more about asthma management and the related services offered in the community.

Event includes kids games and activities, health screenings, farmers market, drawings and prizes, healthy snacks and more!

2013 Lawn Mower Exchange Program


Residents living within the South Coast Air Quality Management District's (SCAQMD) jurisdiction are eligible to register for the 2013 Electric Lawn Mower Exchange Program.


This annual program offers SCAQMD residents an opportunity to help clean the air by exchanging an old, operable gasoline-powered lawn mower and purchasing a new electric lawnmower. Pre-registration is required.  This year, you have five models to choose from, with your cost being from $100 to $250 depending on the model you choose. There will be four exchange locations scheduled.

The film celebrates the 40th anniversary of the brilliant 1972 political campaign that saved the California coastline from rampant over-development. The hour-long documentary features interviews with major coastal activists and staff of the California Coastal Commission.

Two local activists featured in the film, Mel Nutter and Don May, will be the special guests at the screening.

Long Beach Gun Buyback Event

In January, Council asked the Police Department to explore the creation and funding of a gun buyback program. The goal of the program is to reduce the number of guns in the public domain by offering gift cards for unwanted firearms.
