State of the 5th Council District - TONIGHT

 

 

You are invited to the 7th Annual State of the 5th Council District: Six Years of Progress.

Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske will be joined by representatives from the Police and Fire Department, Public Works and City Management to review the accomplishments of 2012 and what we can look forward to in 2013. In addition, meet the NEW East Division Commander, Paul LeBaron.

Holiday Tree Recycling Program 

21st Annual Holiday Tree Recycling Program from December 26, 2012 through January 12, 2013  

 

You can drop your tree off at several locations throughout the City until January 12th.

 

Residents with City refuse service can also have their trees picked up from their homes on Saturday, January 12, 2013 by leaving their trees out where trash is normally collected by 7am on day of collection.

 

All trees being disposed of in this program must have decorations and stands removed, and trees over 12 feet tall should be cut in half.

6th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace March 

Each year hundreds of community members gather to ignite peace throughout the City of Long Beach.   

 

In an effort to lift the consciousness of the community about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy and principals, Councilman Dee Andrews introduced Peace Week - a series of week-long activities designed to unify the community. View the flyer here.

Birds and Wildlife of Los Cerritos Wetlands

Los Cerritos Wetlands Bird/Nature Walk

January 12, 8:00 a.m.

From Long Beach, take PCH to First Street in Seal Beach, turn left and park off the asphalt. We walk into the former Hellman Ranch property or we will drive a short distance to see another part of the wetlands. Please wear closed toed walking shoes or hiking boots, bring binoculars if you have them for this easy paced walk. Great looks at egrets, herons, migratory ducks, songbirds, sparrows, goldfinches, raptors, butterflies, and more. Our once-a-month chance to be on the land itself. It is a beautiful, peaceful experience.

 

Gum Grove park overlooking the Los Cerritos Wetlands 

January 19, 8:00 a.m.

From Long Beach, take PCH, L on Mar Vista, L on Coastline, R on Catalina, L on Avalon. Avalon deadends into parking lot. Wildlife of Los Cerritos Wetlands and Gum Grove Park seen on this easy paced walk. See birds listed above as an example of species seen.

Coastal Art and Poetry Contest
A contest for k-12 students

The Coastal Art & Poetry Contest for k-12 students is accepting entries through the postmark deadline of January 31st. This is a great vacation assignment for students to visit the coast, think about their last visit to the coast, look at coastal photos/videos and dream about one day visiting the coast, and then creatively present their thoughts in artwork or poetry.
 
The 2012 winners and honorable mentions are currently on exhibit at Crystal Cove State Park beach cottage #46 for about one more week, followed by the Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center in Ventura in January. Please visit if you find yourself at either of those beautiful locations. 

Contest details:

The California Coastal Commission invites California students in kindergarten through 12th grade to submit artwork or poetry with a California coastal or marine theme to the annual Coastal Art & Poetry Contest. Up to ten winners will be selected to win $100 gift certificates to an art supply or book store, and each winner's sponsoring teacher will receive a $50 gift certificate for educational supplies, courtesy of Acorn Naturalists, www.acornnaturalists.com. All winners and honorable mentions will receive tickets for their families to visit the Aquarium of the Pacific, courtesy of the Aquarium. Students may have their work featured on Commission web pages and materials, and winning entries will be exhibited throughout the state. Entries must be postmarked by January 31, 2013 to be eligible for the upcoming contest.

Preschool in Nature
at El Dorado Nature Center

Join us for a new session of Preschool in Nature! 

 

Classes take place Tues and Thurs mornings from 9:30-11:30.

 

Enrich your child's learning in an interactive natural setting.  Develop social skills, creativity and group cooperation on the trails of the Nature Center. 

 

For ages 3.5 to 5.  Children must be potty-trained.  This is not a parent-participation program.
