Sgt. MacPherson to Be Honored at The Rosie the Riveter Park Annual Wreaths Across America Ceremony

 

 

Long Beach, CA. - The annual Wreaths Across America ceremony at Rosie the Riveter Park and Interpretive Center at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, December 15th, will include a tribute to Sergeant Thomas R MacPherson who was recently killed in Afghanistan with the commemoration of a Hometown Hero banner in his honor.

 

Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske and the Long Beach Rosie the Riveter Foundation are participating in the nationwide Wreaths Across America ceremony by laying wreaths in memory of our fallen heroes and to honor those who serve our. This will be the third year the ceremony has taken place at the park.

 

Thousands of Christmas wreaths will be placed simultaneously on the graves of the women and men who gave their lives in service of our country at Arlington and nationwide. The wreath laying ceremony is a project of Wreaths Across America.

 

Pastor Chris Lankford, MacPherson family pastor of the Long Beach Alliance Church, will offer the invocation.

 

This ceremony is held in coordination with the annual "Wreaths Across America" program that lays wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery and 450 other sites nationwide on December 15th. For more information, call 562-570-6932 or email district5@longbeach.gov.

5th District Challenges City of Long Beach for Top Prize in Christmas Light Contest

 

The 5th Council District is challenging the rest of the city in the Christmas light contest being sponsored by Belmont Shore Patch.   

 

The contest starts November 26th and the winner will receive $500 to pay their electric bill and $100,000 for their local schools. Popular internet community news site, Belmont Shore Patch will post videos and photographs of homes decorated in Christmas light.  

 

Fifth District residents are being asked to send their videos and photographs to be posted on http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001MBHlZIgLQ7HBfbRPznTDv0Jv6pSN_o0w09-p9PPXlM7scR_rr396ycvLUWoc970TrU-GA-Uwgk_YwD4z5otByNv_4Rgj7_DxX5lSdR3LvnkevLLBk5_uXg== and then sent along to Belmont Shore Patch for entry in the contest.

 

"This is a great way to help our local schools and show off our holiday spirit in the 5th District," declared Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske when asked about why the district is taking on the rest of the city in the Patch holiday lights competition.

Traditional Mexican Nacimientos (nativity scenes) will be the subject of a lecture by Guest Curator, Alice Rumbaugh. It is her extensive collection of nacimientos that will be on display for the holidays in the ranch house at Rancho Los Alamitos.  

 

Parking for this event is onsite at the Rancho. Reservations are still being accepted for this ticketed event. Space is limited. 30th Annual Belmont Shore Christmas Parade

"Go for the Gold" is this year's theme to celebrate our local USA Olympians!  Long Beach's Golden Couple Misty May Treanor (LB State), 3-time Olympic Gold Medalist in Beach Volleyball along with her husband Matt Treanor (Mater Dei HS), LA Dodger, will be our Grand Marshals!  
 

Jessica Hardy (Wilson HS) who completed her first Olympic Games with Gold and Bronze medals (400 medley relay, and 400 freestyle relay, respectively) is one of the many other Olympians who will take the ride down 2nd st.  Alan Knipe the Men's Volleyball Olympic Coach, now back with Long Beach State as the head coach. 
 

The Belmont Shore Christmas Parade will march down East Second Street to the beat of over a dozen local marching bands. Featuring over 100 entries, including floats designed by Long Beach businesses and associations, marching bands, and local personalities and dignitaries. And of course, no Christmas Parade would be complete without an appearance by good ole' St. Nick!

The parade route is along East Second Street and begins heading east from Livingston Avenue to Bayshore Avenue. Entries return to Livingston Avenue heading west along the north side of East Second Street.

Start time will be at 6:00pm again this year. East 2nd St. will close to traffic at 5:00pm, at which time spectators may set up chairs and blankets for a front row seat to the parade.
