Schipske Urges Long Beach Residents to Shop Small

Long Beach, CA., November 9, 2012 – Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske is encouraging 5th District residents to support their local businesses on Saturday, November 24th, this year’s Small Business Saturday®. The Saturday following Thanksgiving and before Cyber Monday has become a shopping day dedicated to supporting small businesses nationwide. Last year, over one hundred million people supported small businesses in their community on Small Business Saturday®.

Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske explained why she supports the initiative, “In these tough economic times, it’s important that we support our neighbors succeed. Small business is the lifeblood of our community, and Small Business Saturday is a day for everyone, from the business owners who create jobs to the customers who buy locally, and purchasing from our local small businesses helps invigorate the economy and keep our community thriving.”

Small Business Saturday® began in 2010 when American Express founded the concept to help small businesses get more exposure during one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year. Now, in its third year, Small Business Saturday is expected to top the 100 million shoppers who participated in 2011. American Express is offering free and easy-to-use tools to help small businesses get the most out of the day and tools for consumers to show their support.
