Celebrating our Long Beach Olympians, and 3 Other Great Events
There are four exciting events happening this weekend and next that are important to our community: The Olympian Parade; The 160th 30-minute Beach Clean-up; "8", a Play about Equality; and a fundraiser at the Silver Fox for a victim of assault.


OLYMPIAN PARADE
Long Beach honors our Olympic athletes with a parade 2 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, September 15, down Second Street in Belmont Shore. Misty May-Treanor, Jessica Hardy, Lauren Wenger, Ryan Bailey, Chay Lapin, Tony Cruz and other Olympic medalists and athletes, as well as 2012 Paralympian Angela Madsen, will appear.

The Olympians will gather for staging at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Belmont Plaza Pool. They will ride in cars provided by local dealerships as well as a few Long Beach Fire Department.

This is our chance to express our thanks and appreciation for their accomplishments, hard work, and patriotism.

We are so proud if them, I hope to see you there!

BEACH CLEAN-UP
I want to invite you to help cleanoir beaches tomorrow, Saturday September 15, for California Coastal Cleanup Day. There are numerous clean ups happening in Long Beach, but I want to particularly highlight Justin Rudd's 30-Minute Beach Cleanup between 9:35 and 10 at Ocean and Granada Ave for the 160th cleanup since Justin began holding beach clean-ups in 1999.

In addition to making our beach cleaner, you can also win door prizes, and there will be complimentary refreshments, candy, bags, gloves, and free parking There will also be cash awards for students from kindergarten through college signed-in before 10 a.m:
  • most students from a classroom, $50
  • group or club with most school spirit, $50
  • school with most students, $50
  • best school colors/jersey/t-shirt on a person, $20
  • everyone in school shirt/sweatshirt or jacket will be in a drawing for $50.
  • best school cheer (do not have to be a cheerleader), $20
  • who can throw football farthest, $20
Students can also receive volunteer recognition forms so they can report service hours.

"8" - A PLAY ABOUT EQUALITY
I am proud to be participating in a one-night- only reading of "8, The Play," with the Public Theatre of Southern California. The play chronicles the historic trial in the federal constitutional challenge to California's Proposition 8, written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter and AFER Founding Board Member Dustin Lance Black.

The performance will take place at 8 p.m. on Friday, September 21st at The Ernest Borgnine Theater, located at 855 Elm Avenue in downtown Long Beach.

The cast includes local leaders and Broadway stars, including Tony Award Winners Ben Vereen and Lyle Kanouse, Broadway and TV Stars Alan Mandell, David Birney and Jonelle Allen, and Community Activist Justin Rudd.

Afterward, guests will participate in a VIP Fundraising Celebration sponsored by Primal Alchemy Chefs Dana and Paul Buchanan. Proceeds will benefit the American Foundation of Equal Rights (AFER). SILVER FOX FUNDRAISER FOR ASSAULT VICTIM
The Silver Fox and GetOutLB have partnered to create a fund to help the victim of an assult 2 weeks ago outside of the Silver Fox, and a fundraiser is being held tomorrow at the Silver Fox for this cause. All funds will go directly to the victim to help offset medical costs incurred as a result of the attack. The fundraiser includes a buffet, and community speakers.

The event is tomorrow, Saturday, September 15, from 5-9 at the Silver Fox, 411 Redondo Av.
