This fall Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine will offer free youth flag football, and volleyball leagues for ages 5 – 14, and a new sport, volley tennis for ages 5-8 at parks and schools across the city. Sign-ups are going on now at all Long Beach park community centers.
The six-week season for the sports will run on Saturdays beginning October 13 and concluding on November 17. Teams will compete in groups of ages 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14.
According to Jose Olmos, Youth Sports Coordinator, Youth Sports staff puts the emphasis on participation and skill development. "There is a wonderful team coaches who work to develop skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, and ensure that youth enjoy a fun, safe environment," he says.
Southeast Region that includes College Estates, El Dorado West, Heartwell, Pan American, Signal Hill, Stearns Champions, Wardlow and Whaley Parks.
Central/West Region includes 14th Street, Admiral Kidd, Bixby, McBride, Chavez, Drake, King, MacArthur, Miracle, Orizaba, Silverado and Veterans Parks. Teams in this region also play at Burbank Edison, Garfield, Hudson, Lafayette and Lee Schools.
The North Region is comprised of Cherry, Coolidge, Davenport, DeForest, Houghton, Ramona, Scherer and Somerset Parks. School sites in the north region are Grant, Starr King and Los Cerritos.
The youth sports program runs year-round with a different sport every quarter. Sign-ups begin for Basketball on December 1, 2012 at local parks.
