Local Harvest Farmers Market at Bixby Park
Every Tuesday from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, residents can expect to see farm fresh fruits and veggies, field cut flowers, gourmet specialty foods, fresh cooked fare, arts & crafts, live music and more.
Lee Ostendorf, a native and resident of Long Beach is the director of Local Harvest Farmers Markets, a certified farmers market that operates in Marine Stadium, Huntington Beach, Buena Park, Wilmington, San Pedro and Garden Grove. Ostendorf grew up going to Bixby Park with her parents and grandparents and fondly remembers Iowa Picnics.
The Certified Producers are Energy Bee Honey, Gama Farm, Lim's Apple Farm, Apson Farms, E & M Produce, Sunny Cal Farms, Gaytan Farm, Mt Morriah Farm, Garcia Produce and Joelle Olive Oil. We have Fresh Fish from Blue Water Seafood.
Specialties are Ann's Bakery, ah Fudge !, Chochie's Exotic Cookies, Annetta's Candy Cakes, Aris Natural Food, The Sandwich Boss and Mr. B's Kettle Corn & Shaved Ice.
Cooked to order fare vendors are Red Oak BBQ, Gourmet Crepes, Olive Wood Pizza, La Copa Empanadas, Me Gusta Tamales, Thai Ranch and North Shore Hawaiian BBQ.
The Arts and Crafts section will include Oliver & Company, Madame Sac, Magical Soap, Tinkin Around, Andes Peruvian Accessories and The Doggie Bakery.
The idea for a farmers market grew out of discussions between Claudia Schou (Friends of Bixby Park) and Lowenthal in trying to activate the space and inspire community members to become more involved at Bixby Park. Schou and her group have organized special events, fundraisers, a gardening club, monthly clean-ups, and other projects intended to protect and improve the park. They have also developed master plans for revitalizing the park's amenities beginning with the space between Broadway and 2nd Street.
The farmers market is scheduled to operate from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm during summer months and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm during winter months. Live music provided by one or two musicians, cooking demonstrations and other activities are planned during the Tuesday markets. Movie nights at the band shell sponsored by Lowenthal are also being planned after the market closes.
