Creating 15,000 New Jobs
Yesterday, Port of Long Beach and city officials gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking and lease-signing of the new Middle Harbor project. The $4.6 billion deal will create close to 15,000 new jobs and lower port pollution. The deal, with Orient Overseas Container will grow an important relationship with a global company, and transform our port into a port of the future.

Creating jobs, and supporting trade and business is extremely important for us, especially in this economy. I commend the Port of Long Beach, the Harbor Commission, and Port staff on their hard work and commitment to smart growth. The new project, set for completion in 2019, will upgrade two shipping terminals and technology.

We must continue to support growth in a smart, green, and environmentally responsible way. Middle Harbor does all of that. I am proud to have supported this project on the City Council along with my colleagues, and I look forward to the continued transformation of our port. Let's keep Long Beach moving and growing.
