6 New Habitat for Humanity Homes
In a partnership with Delta Airlines and the Long Beach Housing Development Company, Habitat for Humanity and their volunteer crew have finished building a new home on Magnolia Avenue in the Washington Neighborhood, and the new owners, the Castillo family, moved in yesterday. The beautiful three bedroom, two bathroom home is part of the ongoing revitalization of this neighborhood, and is just one of six Habitat homes that will be built in the First District over the coming year. Habitat homeowners must work and pay their own mortgage, but the financial support and volunteer time provided by Habitat makes the dream of home ownership available to many people who might not otherwise have that opportunity. Our thanks go out to Habitat for Humanity, the folks at LB Housing Development, and Delta Airlines, a great corporate partner we look forward to working with more in the future. Congratulations to the Castillos, and welcome to the First District!
Mary Molina Community Garden
Thanks to the generous donation of land by the Molina family, a vacant lot at 25th and Santa Fe is ready to become greenspace for the community. The Mary Molina Community Garden is named after Mary Molina, an avid gardner whose children are some of the most active, philanthropic, and enthusiastic citizens of Long Beach, and who made this park possible. Mary Molina has always advocated for the importance of greenspace and gardening in urban communities, and this Community Garden is a perfect way to honor her and her family. The park will open in 2011 Our thanks to the Molina's for their generosity and vision!
Holiday Cheer for Children Today
Many of you know that I'm a Board member of Children Today, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children who are struggling with homelessness and their families. This is especially critical during the holiday season. I want to invite you to join me and other community leaders for Children Today's 13th Annual Holiday Cheer Silent Auction and Wine-tasting, tomorrow, November 18 at 6pm, on the top floor of the ARCO building on Ocean Avenue. The event is one of our most important ways of raising funds to support the children we serve, and it's also a lot of fun. Click here for more information.
I am glad to share these three pieces of news that we can all be thankful for.
Go Long Beach!
