One of my top priorities since taking office has been the revitalization of our business corridors. We have worked hard to revitalize Pacific Avenue from Broadway to Anaheim with great success, and are working on plans for North Pine, as well as Long Beach Blvd, in Downtown Long Beach.
Next up is 7th Street at Alamitos. We have some great projects that will all be completed in the next 6 months. They include:
Armory Facade Improvement
You may have noticed that construction has already begun on improvements on the National Guard Armory at 7th & Alamitos. We have teamed up with the State of California to repaint the building, install a new iron-rod fence, and new landscaping. The Armory has not seen any improvements in over a decade, and these changes will upgrade an iconic building at this Downtown gateway.
Olive Business Facade Improvements
In the next few weeks, we will begin work on a complete new facade design for three businesses on the corner of 7th & Olive. These new business facades, across the street from St. Anthony High School, will renovate a building in need of a major facelift.
New 6th & Alamitos Median
In December, we will begin work on re-landscaping the median at 6th & Alamitos. This new median will greet drivers as they travel eastbound on 6th, and turn onto Alamitos and MLK.
New Banners, Trees, Bike Racks
You may have noticed new St. Anthony Neighborhood Banners along Olive, 5th, and 6th around St. Anthony High School and church. We have also installed new trees along 7th street, and new bike racks in the area as well.
Pacific Island Ethnic Museum
The Pacific Island Ethnic Museum is now open at 7th & Alamitos. PIEM is our nation's ONLY museum dedicated to the Pacific Islands, made up of Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia. The new museum, across the street from the Museum of Latin American Art, showcases Pacific Island art, and will serve as a cultural and educational center for those interested in the history and culture of the Islands.
These are just some of the exciting projects that are planned along 7th & Alamitos. This is an important gateway to Downtown, and we hope to make additional improvements in the year ahead.
