Thank you, Mr. City Manager. Special thank you to Chief Quach for his service as our interim chief over these past few weeks.
A special thank you to the Command staff of the Long Beach Police Department for your individual efforts in navigating through these last few months that included a very difficult fiscal environment.
This City was fortunate to draw from an extremely qualified pool of candidates. I commend the City Manager on conducting a very thorough process. It was inclusive, deliberative, impartial, and non-political. I applaud the Council for setting aside politics and allowing the Manager to go out and select the very best candidate to serve our citizens.
The residents of Long Beach should know that your new chief has impeccable credentials and a sterling reputation in the national law enforcement community. He is a truly world-class leader who has demonstrated an ability to foster relationships across diverse communities.
And as a resident of this great city, he is already a member of our community and knows our neighborhoods and where some of our challenges lie.
He talks a little funny and I understand that he may root for the wrong basketball team. But all kidding aside, the residents of Long Beach should know that their safety is in exceptional hands.
As Mayor of Long Beach, it is my distinct pleasure to introduce a truly world-class leader; Long Beach’s new Chief of Police, Jim McDonnell.
