LONG BEACH MAYOR'S TROPHY CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES $35,000 FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND LONG BEACH
JUNIOR GOLF PROGRAMS

LONG BEACH, CA (July 20, 2009) – A full field of local golfers joined Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine Director Phil Hester, American Golf Chief Operating Officer Keith Brown and other local dignitaries and tournament sponsors at the Fourth Annual Long Beach Mayor’s Trophy Charity Golf Tournament presented by Titleist/FootJoy at Skylinks Golf Course on Monday, July 13.  More than $35,000 was raised during the day’s activities, which included a golf demonstration by paraplegic golfer and trick shot artist Dennis Walters, a shotgun start tournament, a variety of on-course contests, live and silent auctions, and an awards dinner.

Proceeds will benefit junior golf programs throughout the City of Long Beach, as well as Special Olympics Southern California (www.sosc.org) under the leadership of President and CEO Bill Shumard.   For 40 years, Special Olympics Southern California has empowered children and adults with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition.  Golf is one of 12 Special Olympics sports offered, providing numerous opportunities for advanced competition – including the Summer Games held at CSU Long Beach every year.  Special Olympics changes lives through the power of sport and reaches beyond the athletes who participate.  The coaches, volunteers, families and donors all benefit from the opportunities that Special Olympics Southern California brings to their lives.

"We are pleased to continue the City of Long Beach’s long-standing commitment to provide recreational programs that improve the quality of life for residents of all ages and backgrounds, and the Long Beach Mayor’s Trophy Charity Golf Tournament does just that," said Phil Hester.

Keith Brown added, “We appreciate the outpouring of support from our corporate sponsors and local golfers,  whose generosity made this event possible.  We feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Mayor Foster’s office and the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine to support these two important causes.”  The Long Beach Mayor’s Trophy is operated by the non-profit American Golf Foundation, in cooperation with Partners of Parks.

Acushnet brands Titleist and FootJoy served as Presenting Sponsors of the Mayor’s Trophy.  Silver Sponsors included Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, Jet Blue, Southern California Edison, Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Marriott, Southern California Public Links Golf Association, Entegra, California United Terminals, Consolidated Disposal Service, Downtown Long Beach Associates, Legends Sports Bar & Restaurant, Choura Venue Services, Integrated Business Systems, SA Recycling and EZ Links; while Hole Sponsors included Chick-Fil-A, Hirsch & Associates, Long Beach Container Terminal, Inc., Shoreline Village, City Light & Power, Reischl Physical Therapy, Dell, MOL, Sports Solutions and Greenberg Glusker.
