In an effort to build closer relationships between the police and the community, Rae Gabelich, Councilwoman 8th District, created a community partnership between the Long Beach Police Department, Segway Long Beach and Signal Hill Petroleum.
Through the Long Beach Police Foundation, Signal Hill Petroleum donated the funds to underwrite Segways to be used in the department's North Division. The Segways from Segway Long Beach are a two-wheeled, self-balancing electric vehicle, a perfect transportation answer to short distance travel. A human transporter motorized scooter.
Councilwoman Rae Gabelich states "making business people and visitors feel safe in the Bixby Knolls area is our goal, and with the help of Signal Hill Petroleum we are able to enhance our police departmentís ability to do just that."
Police Chief Anthony Batts states, "The Segway has proven to be a valuable tool that allows patrol officers to be more visible and accessible in community policing situations. With Segways, officers are able to get out of their cars and have increased interaction with members of our community."
Dave Slater, Chief Operating Officer for Signal Hill Petroleum and Board Member for the Long Beach Police Foundation states, "Signal Hill Petroleum is excited about this opportunity to expand our partnership with the City, by providing funding for police Segways. Signal Hill Petroleum strongly supports the community and the Long Beach Police Department, and we believe this is a great community investment opportunity."
Barry Fulton, Owner Long Beach Segway, states "as a Segway business owner located at the Pike in downtown Long Beach, we are proud to contribute to this partnership. We recognize the tremendous assistance Segways bring to law enforcement"
The Long Beach Police Foundation is an independent; community based non-profit organization that encourages public-private partnerships to support public safety and help build a safer community.
