Frequently Asked Questions
When is the open enrollment period?
Applications will be available both in hard copy at local agencies and online beginning Monday, November 3, 2008 through Saturday, November 29, 2008. This is our first year accepting on-line applications via our website: www.haclb.org. Both hard copy and on-line applications will be accepted for the entire open period with hard copy applications requiring a post-mark dated no later than November 29, 2008. Online applications will no longer be accepted after midnight November 29, 2008.
Do I have to have AIDS to apply during this Open Enrollment period?
To apply during the Open Enrollment period, you or someone in your household must be HIV+ or have AIDS. When your name is selected from the waiting list, you will be required to provide medical proof of this condition.
Do I have to be a Long Beach resident to apply for assistance?
No. To apply for HOPWA assistance you do not need to be a resident of Long Beach. However, once you have been selected from the Waiting List and determined eligible for assistance, you must locate housing in the City of Long Beach.
May I bring my application to the Housing Authority?
No. The Housing Authority will only accept applications that are mailed to the Post Office Box on the Application or are entered on line via the website.
How will I know if the Housing Authority received my application on time?
The Housing Authority will mail each applicant a notice confirming that the application was received.
How soon will the Housing Authority call me after I submit my application?
Applicants are placed on the waiting list in random order, and names are selected through a lottery process. After an applicant’s name is selected, it may take several months to verify that the household is eligible for assistance. You will be provided with more information once you are selected from the waiting list.
How long will it take before I receive my rental assistance?
Being placed on the Housing Authority’s Waiting List does not guarantee that you will be able to participate in the program. However, the average wait period for the HOPWA Waiting List is approximately 24-36 months.
Should I tell the Housing Authority if I move to a new address?
It is important that the Housing Authority always have each Applicant’s current contact information. If you move or change your address, you must notify the Housing Authority by going to the website to change your information at www.haclb.org or in writing at HACLB, Attn: Waiting List Clerk, 521 E. 4th Street., Long Beach, CA 90802)
