||All Long Beach Fire Stations Giving Away Free Smoke Detectors on June 21|
||Frank Hayes, Battalion Chief PIO/FP Pager 562.220.0023|
|Every Long Beach Fire Station will give away up to two smoke detectors for each residence in the City of Long Beach on Saturday, June 21, from 9:00 am to 5 pm. Properly installed and maintained smoke detectors in the home are one of the best and least expensive means of providing an early warning of a potentially deadly fire.|
Fire Department staff will provide an orientation on proper smoke detector usage, including proper mounting locations (hallways and sleeping areas); and the importance of checking the batteries regularly and reading manufacturers’ instructions for use.
The Long Beach Fire Department and the Community Development Department’s Neighborhood Services Bureau are sponsoring the Smoke Detector "Give Away" Day to provide for better safety within the City and encourage community members to take advantage of this free, potentially life-saving opportunity.
Smoke detectors save lives, prevent injuries, and minimize property damage by enabling residents to detect fires early in their development. In fact, the risk of dying from fires in homes without smoke alarms is approximately twice as high as in homes that have working smoke alarms.
