LBPD Offers Crime Prevention Tips

The Long Beach Police Department would like to encourage residents to practice the following crime prevention tips in order to protect their households:

  • Secure all windows and doors by utilizing proper locking devices.
  • Use "ventilation" and auxiliary locks on sliding doors and windows to improve security.
  • Install "dead bolt" locks on all exterior doors.
  • Properly secure all garage, cellar, patio, or other doors that can lead into your residence.
  • Ensure that the area surrounding your residence has adequate lighting.  Keep ladders, chairs and other items that can assist burglars away from your home.
  • Consider installing an alarm system and utilize visible signs of the system (placards, window stickers, etc.) as a deterrent. Dogs can also be utilized for additional security as a deterrent.
  • Never leave a house key available: under a doormat, in a flowerpot or on the ledge of the door. These are places where burglars will look.
  • When going on vacation, be sure to stop mail and newspaper delivery or have a neighbor collect them daily.
  • Call 9-1-1 (or 562-435-6711 if calling from a cellular phone) to report all suspicious activity or crimes in progress, and coordinate with neighbors to do the same.
  • Participate in the Neighborhood Watch Program, which organizes neighbors and establishes meetings with the police. Participants in Neighborhood Watch benefit by learning valuable home security and personal safety tips. For more information about starting a Neighborhood Watch program on your block, call Nicole Avalos at 562-570-7229.
If you have any information regarding these crimes, please contact the Long Beach Police Department at (562) 435-6711.
