  - If he were just starting out as a reporter, Thomas Friedman would want to be covering education -- the area most vital to our national security -- he writes in an opinion piece in The New York Times. He quotes President Obama, who on November 4 cited a military study that concluded 75 percent of young Americans between the ages of 17 to 24 are unable to enlist in the military today because they have failed to graduate from high school, have a criminal record, or are physically unfit.

Critical Action Needed: Raise the Quality of Our Early Learning Programs
Earlier this summer, AB 2592 (Buchanan), which creates an Early Learning Quality Rating Scale (QRS) pilot program, passed the Senate Education Committee. Next week, the bill moves to the Senate Appropriations Committee, the last step before it can reach the Senate floor for a vote. The Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to hear AB 2592 next Monday, Aug. 2, so please send a letter to the committee members now, urging them to support AB 2592.
