City of Long Beach and Safe Kids Los Angeles to sponsor safety seat checkup in September
The City of Long Beach Neighborhood Services Bureau, the Long Beach Health Department’s Best Babies Collaborative Project, and Safe Kids Los Angeles will partner to offer a by-appointment-only car seat checkup on September 15, 2007 in an effort to address the issue of deaths and injuries to children as passengers of motor vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. children between the ages of 1 and 14. Therefore, "for children as passengers, riding in the car unrestrained poses the greatest risk factor in death and injuries" said Dennis Thys, Manager of the Neighborhood Services Bureau (NSB). Much of the problem has to do with car seat misuse; nationally, it is estimated that 8 out of 10 car seats are not being used correctly.
