Euducational Programs for Youth Discovery Tours
Your school field trip to the Nature Center can now help you meet instructional standards in science, language arts, social studies and math. Each tour is especially tailored to the needs of a particular grade. The per-child cost of each tour is $4. Kindergarten Turtle Shells and Flower Smell S: 1a,2a,3b,4ae ELLS: 1.1,2.1,2.2 Join us on a sensory safari as we use our eyes, ears, nose and fingers to experience the living world around us. We’ll watch for wings, listen for leaves and smell for scents as we observe similarities and differences in plants and animals.
1st grade Staying Alive S: 2abc,3a,4b ELW: 1.2,2.2 ELLS: 1.5,2.1,2.4 Have you ever wondered where a gopher gets its groceries, a bird finds a beverage, or a turtle makes its territory? We’ll discover the answers to these questions and more as we explore the basic needs for survival that all organisms share.
2nd grade Are You My Mother? S:2abf,4bcfg ELW:2.1, ELLS: 2.1 From caterpillar to butterfly, tadpole to frog, seed to blossom, we’ll investigate the life cycles of plants and animals. As we hike the trails, your students will learn that all living things change as they grow.
3rd grade Home Sweet Habitat S: 3abd,5de ELW: 2.2 ELLS: 1.2 Many birds, reptiles, insects and mammals call the Nature Center home. Whether they live at the muddy edges of the stream, in the top of the tallest tree, or in a hole in the ground, discover how their color, teeth, feathers, scales and fur enable them to survive.
3rd & 4th Grade Acorns, Sea, and Sage
3rd Grade HS: 3.1#1,1,3.2#2 ELW:2.2, ELLS:1.2 4th Grade HS:4.1#3,4.2#1 ELW:2.1, ELLS:1.1,1.2,1.8,2.1 Located along the San Gabriel River where it nears the ocean, the native plant communities of the Nature Center are home to oak trees, flowering ceanothus and fragrant sages. Explore how the Tongva and Chumash Indians of our area utilized.
4th Grade Web of Life S: 2abc,3c,6cf ELW: 2.1, ELLS: 1.1,1.2,1.8,2.1 From a red-shouldered hawk hunting for gophers over the meadow to a beetle munching on leaf litter, this tour takes a look at how living things depend on one another and on their environment for survival. Students will explore the role that producers, consumers and decomposers have in cycling energy and matter through an ecosystem.
5th Grade What about Water? S:3de,6abcf ELW:2.3, ELLS: 1.5,2.2 The San Gabriel River watershed encompasses the Nature Center’s ponds and streams that provide food, shelter and water for many animals. Using scientific tools and instruments your students will discover the unique properties of water and how it sustains all life on Earth. Beetle Brigade
Ages 3-5. As spring turn to summer we’ll discover how young plants and animals grow and flourish. Animal babies, seeds and flowers will be the focus of our exploration. Sing a song, listen to a story or make friends with a puppet. Tuesday – Saturday, $3 per person

| Badger Tours
Ages 5-18. Scouts can enhance merit badge work with a 1-1/2 hour program focused on a specific badge. $4 per person.

| Discovery Tours
Elementary teachers, explore the Nature Center trails with your students on a naturalist-guided tour. You’ll make discoveries through hands-on investigation and activities designed to support the Academic Content Standards at your grade level. Call 570-1745 for reservations. $4 per person.
