A section of the El Dorado Nature Center one-mile trail has been temporarily closed while fledgling Cooper’s Hawks attempt to leave their nest. The Cooper’s Hawk is a medium-sized hawk that hunts smaller birds and is built for fast flight through woods and forest areas. It is estimated that the closure will be in effect for three to four weeks in order to protect the safety of both patrons and the birds. During the time when the young birds attempt to leave their nest, parent birds may become stressed by the close proximity of humans. El Dorado Nature Center visitors are asked to observe posted signs and to avoid the closed area of the one-mile trail until further notice. For updates on the one-mile trail closure, call (562) 570-1745. The Center’s two-mile trail will still be accessible as it is far enough away from the nest site to still be safe. | El Dorado Nature Center
Looking for a bit of nature in the middle of the city? Nestled between the San Gabriel River and the 605 Freeway, El Dorado Nature Center is an oasis of natural habitat, offering visitors the chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the urban environment.
The nearly 100 acres that make up the Nature Center grounds provide sanctuary to over 150 species of birds, a wide variety of trees and plant life and many species of urban wildlife including turtles, frogs, rabbits, skunks and squirrels. Two miles of dirt trails and a ¼ mile paved trail wind around two lakes and a stream and through forested areas, grasslands and wildflowers. At the entrance, cross over the wooden bridge that spans the lake and you'll find yourself on a small island that houses the Visitor Center. The building houses educational displays, a museum gallery featuring local artists and a small gift shop offering environmentally themed books and gifts. Many thousands of visitors come each year to walk the trails and experience the beauty and serenity of nature. Others visit as part of a school tour, guided walk or other educational program. The center also builds ties with the community through a strong volunteer program, special events and as a community resource for education on the environment.
