Welcoming Pope Francis at the White HouseRelease Date: 2015-09-24
I was deeply honored to be in Washington, D.C. this week at the invitation of President Obama and the First Lady to help them welcome Pope Francis on his first official visit to the United States.
I joined the President and other mayors and officials as Pope Francis arrived at the South Lawn of the White House. I am proud that our city was represented at this historic event.
Pope Francis has been an incredibly humble leader, and has developed a very positive agenda. I especially appreciate his inclusiveness and openness. He reminds us of how important it is to focus on the poor and the hungry.
Tuesday, I met at the White House with other mayors and White House officials to discuss policy issues with the administration. I talked about our drive to end veteran homelessness, as well as Port and transportation issues.
The White House has been a great supporter of many of our initiatives and they are truly committed to Long Beach.
