Remembering our Local HeroesRelease Date: 2016-05-27
As we prepare to enjoy the long Memorial Day weekend, let's remember the reason for this important holiday: To honor and remember our fallen service men and women, and contemplate their sacrifices in service of democracy and freedom.
More than 1.3 million Americans have died in military service to our country. Their devotion and bravery is the reason we can enjoy the first days of the summer season in peace. Their sacrifices have protected our freedom and equality for more than 240 years, and we owe them our gratitude and eternal respect.
14 residents of Long Beach have died in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I'm profoundly grateful for their service. The website of the Los Angeles Times has a memorial page honoring these men and women, and all servicemembers from California who have perished. I encourage you to visit the page to learn more about these heroes and their sacrifice.
Their names should never be forgotten:
Anthony Davis Jr.
Andrew W. Harvell
Thomas R. MacPherson
Roberto Martinez Salazar
God Bless them, their families, and our country. As we enjoy this Memorial Day, let's keep them all in our thoughts and prayers.
