Measure A KickoffRelease Date: 2017-03-03
Today we launched the biggest infrastructure investment in our city in a generation.
Thanks to last year’s passage of Measure A, we stood today at the intersection of East Jackson Street and Walnut Avenue where we jump started the repairs. This is part of our $150 million multi-year infrastructure plan.
Last year, more than 60 percent of voters supported Measure A because our community decided it was time to do something about our aging infrastructure. Over the next few years, you will see a great deal of construction not just to our streets, but also to our libraries, parks and water systems.
The first phase of the citywide Measure A street improvements will slurry seal 39 street miles across Long Beach and is expected to be complete by the end of this summer. This year will also see street and sidewalk repairs. In the coming years, crews will also work on arterial street reconstruction in various locations, sidewalk repair, replacement of select street signage, and the creation of an alley management plan.
Measure A is not only improving our streets, but the quality of our public safety, as it will add more police officers on our streets. Long Beach will be improving 911 paramedic response times and restoring firefighters at critical locations. We’ve also restored Fire Engine 8 to Belmont Shore, Paramedic Rescue 12 to North Long Beach, the Police South Division in downtown and the Police Academy.
The temporary sales tax is expected to generate approximately $48 million annually for the first six years and then approximately $24 million annually for the final four years. The first year of the Measure A Plan includes an estimated $25.7 million for capital improvement projects.
Next time you walk, bike, or drive around Long Beach and see construction zones, look out for signage that says Measure A, because what you’ll see is our city working to make a safer and better Long Beach. A special thanks to our hard working staff at the Public Works Department who make all of this possible.
