Our team offers a variety of programs and services related to planning, building and safety, code enforcement, affordable housing, neighborhood improvement and historic preservation to help create and maintain more safe, sustainable and livable neighborhoods. We are committed to providing an exceptional customer experience for residents, property and business owners, builders, investors and visitors alike and is available to provide guidance about our services to ensure the success of your project. 


To help balance the City’s budget during this economic downturn, Development Services will be closed on alternating Fridays for staff furloughs (unpaid time off). During these furlough days, our Department's regular services, including inspections, will be unavailable. To see a schedule of impacted service days, visit longbeach.gov/furlough


MODIFIED OPERATIONS DUE TO COVID-19

Due to COVID-19, City Hall, including the Development Permit Center and Neighborhood Resource Center, remains closed to the public until further notice.

The Development Services Department will be continuing modified operations via phone, email, and online. Please visit the following Bureau pages for more details on how to access our services and support:

Building a Better Long Beach — 2020 Quarterly Reports on Key Service Metrics 

       
 
   
 
Building & Safety Bureau
Staff for the Bureau — who work to ensure that buildings are safe, sustainable and structurally sound — responded to 9,144 phone calls for plan checks and completed reviews of 1,030 projects.  A total of 2,286 permits were issued and 10,307 residential & commercial inspections were conducted.

Code Enforcement Bureau
Working to maintain and improve the quality of life of neighborhoods and community corridors, the Bureau received a total of 1,322 general property complaints and collected $12,118 in fines and fees for various violations. Also, a total of 9,258 City health order compliance inspections were conducted.

Housing & Neighborhood Services Bureau
Tasked with helping create a more livable and sustainable community, Bureau staff completed 21 home and commercial improvement rebate projects around the City.  The Neighborhood Leadership Program for this year culminated during the quarter with 20 student graduates.

Planning Bureau
The Bureau, which plays an essential role in shaping the City’s future, saw 117 historic preservation cases processed and completed, 46 project approval reviews conducted and 3,890 customers assisted on the Bureau’s Zoning Information Line.
