|MFHEC Background & Grand Opening|
In 1998, Kaiser Permanente donated a former Kaiser health clinic to the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) for the development of a health education center. With generous grants from the Earl B. and Loraine H. Miller Foundation, The California Endowment, Kaiser Permanente, The Boeing Company and several other public and private organizations, the DHHS was able to renovate the facility and make the Miller Family Health Education Center (MFHEC) a reality.
The MFHEC Grand Opening was celebrated on March 11, 2004. The keynote speaker was Dr. Robert Ross, CEO/President of The California Endowment, who said the new facility will put Long Beach at the forefront of new trends in medicine, which will concentrate on prevention and education.
Other notable speakers of the day included City of Long Beach Mayor Beverly O’Neill, Long Beach DHHS Director Ronald Arias, 4th District LA County Supervisor Don Knabe, Jerry McCall of Kaiser Permanente, and Walter Florie, Jr., President of the Earl B. and Loraine H. Miller Foundation. More than 200 guests attended including MFHEC funding partners, Long Beach City Councilmembers, City staff, representatives from health care organizations, community based organizations and community members. All in attendance were given tours of the facility, and a demonstration of the state-of-the-art interpretation equipment.
